Five lead in DR. Philip Corbin Open chess tournament
After two rounds of the third qualifier for the national chess championship finals, the Dr. Philip Corbin Open, five players sit atop of the leader board with two points from their two games.
The leaders include Kemp Lynch, Adam Roachford, Julissa Figueroa, international master Orlando Husbands and the person whom the tournament is named after, Dr. Philip Corbin.
They are three qualifiers for the national finals. From each one, the first three players will qualify to move forward to the finals to join the current national champion. The qualifiers have been named after multi times national champions, C.B. Gilkes, Kevin Denny and Dr. Philip Corbin.
In the last round, Husbands defeated top under 20 male junior Louis Wilson, Corbin won from Boris Thompson, Lynch won a long endgame from Allan Herbert, Figueroa defeated Owen Waldrond and Roachford won from the wily veteran Othneil Harewood. Other victors included Travis Grant, Cyprian La Touche and Mileke Sinckler.
Going into the third round on this Sunday morning at 10.00 a.m. at the Coles Building, Bay Street, the critical matches will see Figueroa versus Husbands, Corbin against Roachford and Wilson taking on Lynch with the white pieces.
