Wilson wins Silver for Barbados at CAC Youth Chess Championship
/0 Comments/in CAC, Tournaments/by BCFWilson wins Silver for Barbados at CAC Youth Chess Championship
Barbados top junior female player Hannah Wilson has won the silver medal at the 2022 Central American and Caribbean(C.A.C) Under 14 female chess championship which was played in Tegucigalpa, Honduras over the last week.
Wilson went in as the number one seed and was the Under 12 female champion from last year and was the fancied player in the field. Things however went awry for Wilson when she lost to the eventual winner Daniela Deycy Raymundo of Guatemala in round three. From here Wilson would have to play catch- up for the rest of the tournament. She immediately started the chase in earnest from the next round, when she defeated Aradhana Singh of Trinidad, and the leader Raymundo drew against Esther Lobo from Panama. Both players then won all their games up to the final round when Wilson won but Raymundo drew their respective games.
This meant that both players finished on 7 ½ points from 9. But Raymundo would win on the fact that the first tie-break was the direct result of their match and Raymundo had been victorious over Wilson then. So, Raymundo would gain the gold medal and Wilson the silver. Lobo came third on 7 points.
The other Bajan in this section of the event was Chanon Reifer-Belle. Reifer-Belle found the going a little tough but finished with a credible 50 %. She initially was ranked 5th of the 15 players from 7 countries, but she finally finished in 7th position.
Barbados also had two players in the Under 18 combined sections. Louis Wilson was our open representative and Gaybrianna Moore our female. The two sections were combined after enough females had not registered for a separate female event.
Louis started brightly and was in joint 8th position with 2 ½ points after 4 rounds. He however managed only two points in his final 5 games and could finish no higher than 13th spot in the 29-player field.
Gaybrianna Moore finished in 23rd place overall and 6th among the girls in the combined field with 3 ½ points. The Open section was won by Alan Otero of Cuba, while Sofia Mayorga of Costa Rica was the top female.
The C.A.C Youth festival had just over 250 players representing 9 countries in 18 age category sections from Under 8 to Under 18 Male/Female .(BCF)

/0 Comments/in Nationals, Tournaments/by BCFWilson and Reifer-Belle Claim Chess Crowns
Top junior female chess player Hannah Wilson of the Queens College school duly won the 2022 Under 13 Female Scholastics chess championship in convincing fashion over the last weekend.
Wilson dispatched all opponents in a small field to continue to add to her hardware for the year. The reigning local female champion was in a no-nonsense mood as she won all her games to score five points and finish a point ahead of Naomi Lewis of Harrison College in second, with Tedra Gibson (Combermere) finishing another point back in third on three points.
Concurrently Chaz Refer- Belle of Charles F. Broome Memorial Primary was also putting in a similarly exemplary performance as he won all five of his matches to capture the Under 9 Open Scholastics event. This was combined with the Under 7 event.
Tayari Wallace finished in second place on four points only losing to the eventual winner. Akeli Grazette was in third place with a score of 2 points.
Jaeda Herbert scored three points to become the Under 9 scholastics female champion. Asura Nosakhere was the Under 7 champion.

Jaikaran Victorious in 2022 Under 13 Open Scholastics Chess Championship
/0 Comments/in Nationals, Tournaments/by BCFJaikaran Wins Under 13 Open Scholastics Chess Championship 2022
Aaron Jaikaran of Harrison College was crowned the National Scholastics Under 13 Open chess champion of Barbados when the event was completed recently at the St. Michael School.
Jaikaran defeated Nathan Reid in the last round of the event, to edge home on the first tie-break which was the result of the direct encounter between players who finished on the same number of points. Both players had finished on 5 points from 6 games.
Reid had looked impressive throughout the event as he had defeated more fancied opponents like Eden Gibson and Samuel Greenidge of Queen’s College in rounds 4 and 5. Reid went into the final round with the sole lead on five points, and once he had avoided defeat to Jaikaran, he would have clinched his first national title.
However, Jaikaran who had suffered an upset at the hands of Deryck Boyce in round two, was the player who was always pressing during the high intensity match. Reid attempted to trade off the major pieces in an attempt to reach a draw. He however fell to a tactical shot that gave Jaikaran an advantage of a superior piece ending, which Jaikaran duly converted.
This result thus gave Jaikaran a well-deserved title to add to his Under 11 scholastic title that he had won earlier in the year.
Reid should be proud of his second-place finish in his first major event and seems a talented player with a good temperament. Eden Gibson finished in third on 4 ½ points, while Samuel Greenridge finished fourth, ahead on tie-break on 4 points, ahead of Alexi Frederick and Liam Yearwood.
Almost two dozen players made this event an exciting and memorable event. (BCF)

Wilson upstages favourites to win VEXX Tournament
/0 Comments/in Tournaments/by BCFWilson upstages favourites to win VEXX Tournament
Teenager Louis Wilson upstaged more seasoned opponents to convincingly win the Barbados Chess Federation’s (BCF) VEXX Tournament.
The 17-year-old Wilson overcame the challenge of senior Barbados representatives Justin Parsons and Emar Edwards to comfortably take top spot when the five-day event ended on Wednesday night at the Coles Building on Bay Street, Bridgetown.
Wilson, the older brother of reigning ladies national champion, Hannah Wilson, finished with six and a half out of a maximum seven points, ending a point and half more than both Parsons and Edwards, who were part of Barbados’ team at the 44th FIDE Olympiad in Chennai, India in August.
A former national Under-16 champion, Wilson, who was seeded at No. 4, emerged as the favourite to win the event after defeating second seeded Parsons on Sunday night and third seeded Edwards the following night. He duly took the top prize after beating veterans Othneil Harewood and Cyprian La Touche in the final two rounds.
Wilson’s quest for a 100 per cent winning record was denied when he had to settle for a draw in the third round against top seed, England-born Chris White, one of four new players entered in the tournament.
Both Parsons and Edwards finished with five points but Parsons took second place on account of winning the head to head clash in the third round.
Twelve-year-old Chanon Reifer-Belle, who won gold medals in the online rapid and blitz events at the Pan American Youth Championships earlier this year, placed fourth with four and a half points. Among her victories was an upset win against Parsons in the last round.
Harewood took fifth place on the tie-break ahead of La Touche and Alex Sargeant after all three players ended on four points.
The tournament, which was not open to players who finished in the top three spots at the National Championship and Ladies National Championship in April, attracted 16 players. Among the newcomers to BCF competitions was president of the Barbados Amateur Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation, Dr. Alfred Sparman.
The BCF will now turn its attention to the 2022 Annual General Meeting which is scheduled for Saturday at the Coles Building. (BCF)

Barbados Chess Federation receives Gift
/0 Comments/in Tournaments/by BCFBarbados Chess Federation receives Gift
The Barbados Chess Federation (BCF) recently received a donation of equipment from the Gift of Chess, a nonprofit organization based in New York, whose goal is to transform lives through the universal language of chess.
This organization distributes chess sets and chess training technology across four key social initiatives, those being educational, prison, global, and elderly outreach. It is active with chess federations, educational institutions, and non-governmental agencies especially in developing countries.
The Bajan leg of its global outreach of the body was represented by Marissa Broomes, a teacher based in New York, but born in Barbados. She made the equipment donation at her primary school alma matter Lawrence T Gay, where she gifted the equipment to former Barbados Chess federation president Rohan Waithe.
In their educational initiative, the Gift of chess has given chess sets to many schools all over the world from each New York city elementary school to schools in Lagos, Nigeria. They also donate a chess training application. With the donation, its hoped that a club would spring up at the institution and that students would learn to apply some of the skills that they would pick up when they learn to play the game such critical thinking, planning, problem solving and time management.
With this donation it would be hoped that the BCF would seek initiatives especially at the community level to use this equipment.
The chess federation calendar ticks over this weekend with the hosting of the Margaret Prince Memorial rapid online event. This is a female only event for Caribbean territories in honor of Barbados’s first female national champion Margaret Prince.

/0 Comments/in Tournaments/by BCFWilson, Reifer-Belle share third prize in Margaret Prince Memorial Female Tournament
Rising chess talents Hannah Wilson and Chanon Reifer-Belle shared third prize as Jamaican Rachel Miller took top honours in the second Margaret Prince Memorial Rapid Online Female Tournament over the weekend.
The 13-year-old Wilson, who was crowned as the youngest Barbados ladies national champion in April, and the 12-year-old Reifer-Belle, who won gold medals in the online rapid and blitz events at the Pan American Youth Championships earlier this year, both ended with five out of a maximum seven points in the two-day event that attracted regional participation
Miller, a Woman International Master who placed second behind fellow Jamaican Raehanna Brown in last year’s inaugural event, won the tournament with six points and clinched top spot with a decisive victory against Kaithlyn Tjong Tjin Joe of Suriname in the final round.
Tjong Tjin Joe started the last round as the front-runner on five and a half points, but Miller, who dropped a point when she did not contest the fourth round, prevailed to emerge as the champion.
Wilson lost to Miller in the third round and also went under to Reifer-Belle when the two Barbadians met in the fifth round. Reifer-Belle also lost to Miller in the sixth round and her other defeat was against Tjong Tjin Joe in the third round.
Samantha Aponte of Aruba also finished with five points to share the third prize with Wilson and Reifer-Belle.
The event, which was organised by the Women’s Chess Sub-Committee of the Barbados Chess Federation (BCF), attracted 24 players.
It was played in honour of Margaret Prince, Barbados’ first ever women’s chess champion who was one of the most vocal advocates for women’s chess and a founding member of the Barbados Ladies Chess Association.
The next event on the BCF’s calendar will be the VEXX Tournament, which starts on Saturday and will be played over five successive days at the Coles Building on Bay Street in Bridgetown. (BCF)

Wilson wins two categories at National Scholastics Championships
/0 Comments/in Tournaments/by BCFWilson wins two categories at National Scholastics Championships
Reigning national ladies chess champion Hannah Wilson dominated the National Scholastics Championships by winning two of the categories.
In the first local over-the-board action for juniors since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wilson captured the Girls’ Under-15 and Under-17 sections when the Championships concluded last Saturday at the Coles Building on Bay Street in Bridgetown.
In the Under-15 age-group in which the boys and girls were merged due to insufficient entries among the females, the 13-year-old Queen’s College student took the Girls’ category with five and a half out of a maximum six points. She had to settle for a draw against Aaron Jaikaran in the fifth round but had her way for the rest of the competition. Naomi Lewis of Harrison College finished second in the Under-15 Girls’ category with three points, while Sahara Brathwaite of Queen’s College was third with two points.
Samuel Greenidge and Kanye Williams, both of Queen’s College, made a favourable impression in the Under-15 Open section and both finished with five points, losing only to Wilson. Greenidge, however, was declared the champion on the tie-break ahead of Williams with Jaikaran taking third place on four and a half points.
Wilson completed a 100 per cent winning record in the Under-17 Girls’ age-group in which the boys and girls were also merged. She went into the final round in a top-of-the-table clash against the previously unbeaten Alesha Lovell and duly won to record a maximum five points with Lovell taking second place on four points.
Alex Sargeant was the Under-17 Open champion with three points, while Jamani Bowen took second place with two points.
Jaikaran, of Harrison College, dominated the Under-11 Open category by scoring a perfect six points to win by one and a half points ahead of Chaz Reifer-Belle of Charles F. Broome Primary. Alexander Berry of Harrison College placed third on the tie-break ahead of Nathan Patterson-Simmons of Charles F. Broome Primary after both players ended on four points.
In the Under-11 Girls’ category, Jaeda Herbert of Luther Thorne Primary and Kayla Culpepper of Harrison College emerged as joint champions with four and a half points each. They were unable to be separated after the third tie-breaker. Makayla St. Aimee was third with three points.
The Championships, which attracted 44 players, were contested over six successive days, with the Under-11s in action last week Monday and Tuesday, the Under-15s on Wednesday and Thursday and the Under-17s on Friday and Saturday. (BCF)

Four Barbadians conditionally awarded titles after Olympiad
/0 Comments/in Olympiad, Tournaments/by BCFFour Barbadians conditionally awarded titles after Olympiad
Four Barbadian chess players have been conditionally awarded titles following their performance at the 44th FIDE Olympiad in Chennai, India.
The four are reigning national ladies champion Hannah Wilson, double Pan American Youth Championships gold medallist Chanon Reifer-Belle, former national Under-20 and Under-18 female champion Kiarra Eversley and former national Under-20 champion Justin Parsons.
Parsons has been conditionally awarded the title of Candidate Master, while Wilson, Reifer-Belle and Eversley have been conditionally awarded the title of Woman Candidate Master.
The quartet, competing at their first Olympiad, achieved the requirement of attaining a 50 per cent record from a minimum seven games during the July 29 to August 9 event. They must now fulfil a minimum rating requirement to be fully awarded the title.
Parsons, who scored six out of ten points and moved his rating to 1795 after the Olympiad, needs to achieve a rating of 2000 to be awarded the Candidate Master title, while the requirement for the three female players to be awarded the Woman Candidate Master title is a rating of 1800.
The 13-year-old Wilson, who was crowned as the youngest Barbados ladies national champion in April, scored five and a half out of ten points at the Olympiad and improved her rating to 1573.
Reifer-Belle, 12, who captured gold medals in the online rapid and blitz events at the Pan American Youth Championships earlier this year and became the youngest Barbadian to compete at an Olympiad, achieved three and a half out of seven points and moved her rating to 1269.
Eversley, 20, who is also a CARIFTA medallist, gained four points out of ten – she satisfied the requirement for the conditional title by having four points after eight rounds – and now has a rating of 1374.
Two other Barbadians narrowly missed out of achieving conditional titles. Emar Edwards collected four and a half points from ten games, while Gaybrianna Moore scored three points from six games. (BCF)

Barbados’ Open team ends with victory at Chess Olympiad
/0 Comments/in Olympiad, Tournaments/by BCFBarbados’ Open team ends with victory at Chess Olympiad
Barbados’ Open team rounded off their campaign with a comfortable victory over Cameroon on the final day of the 44th FIDE Chess Olympiad in Chennai, India on Tuesday.
The Bajan men won 3-1 to complete their fifth victory in 11 rounds that ensured they finished above their seeding at the beginning of the tournament.
Ranked 124th out of 188 teams, Barbados ended in 110th after defeating 162nd ranked Cameroon at the Sheraton Mahabalipuram Resort and Convention Centre.
FIDE Master Justin Blackman registered his sixth victory by defeating International Master Marius Amba Oyon on the way to finishing with eight out of a maximum 11 points – half-point more than his performance at the 2018 Olympiad when he was also Barbados’ most outstanding player.
Olympiad first-timers Justin Parsons and Emar Edwards also rounded off with wins to complete satisfying debuts. Parsons won against Bleriot Metuno Kuete to end with six points from ten games, while Edwards prevailed over Loic Zebaze Dongmo to finish with four and a half points from ten games.
Barbados’ top rated player, International Master Orlando Husbands defaulted his game due to dental challenges that affected him for most of the tournament in which he finished with two and a half points from eight games.
For the fifth successive day, there were mixed fortunes for Barbados as the Women’s team lost 2.5-1.5 to the higher rated Monaco.
Gaybrianna Moore pulled off her third straight win against a higher rated opponent, overcoming Woman International Master Julia Lebel-Arias to register the only victory for 111th rated Barbados against 84th rated Monaco.
Reigning national ladies champion Hannah Wilson, 13, played to a draw against Woman Candidate Master Svetlana Berezovska to finish with five and a half points, the most by a Barbadian female.
There were defeats for five-time national ladies champion Woman Candidate Master Katrina Blackman and Kiarra Eversley, who returned to the line-up in place of Chanon Reifer-Belle. Blackman lost to Woman International Master Martine Dubois and Eversley went under to Fiorina Berezovsky.
Blackman finished with four and a half points, Eversley four, Reifer-Belle three and a half and Moore three.
Barbados’ Women, who completed four team wins from their 11 games, placed 113th out of 162 teams. (BCF)
